About our collection

Collection Aeizoon officially exists since June 9, 1999 when we made our first serious steps in growing Sempervivum plants.

Nevertheless, our first plant dates from 1987,  if we don't count the grandmother's Sempervivum tectoricum L. that grew on the roof of the garage in an old, blue cooking pan. Our second plant was Sempervivum arahnoideum we named “Mirko Jovović,” after our friend from whose mother we received it as a gift (its descendants still grow in our garden). The third plant was Sempervivum heuffelii, coming from an old stone wall we found in a nearby village.

Today, our collection consists of 228 different species and is a true rarity in our country. Unfortunately, we have serious assumptions it is one of this kind in the wider region. Nevertheless, there are also some signs of hope as we got in touch with the Serbian Cactus Society that has numerous and very active members. Among them, some people showed a great interest to create a large collection of Sempervivums, so we look at the future from the “south side.”

Let us go now to facts and figures of what we have at this moment. Our collection has 102 natural species and 126 species of hybrids. Five species (S. montanum subsp. montanum, S. tectorum, S. marmoreum, J. heuffelii, S. zeleboriii – natural hybrid in four colors) are the native species of the mountain area in our region, growing in the radius of 100km around Zaječar. The rest of the natural kinds we collected through friends, mainly as already cultivated plants. The hybrid ones we got in different ways, and we have their exact names, the names of their cultivators and their precise “dates of birth.”

On this website, we tried to show them all and illustrate with various photographs, and if you happened to find any mistake in their naming or you had any other suggestion, we would be very glad to hear from you.
